Original Dalek/Cyberman voice dies |
TarQuin writes " Peter Hawkins, the man who helped create the terrifying voice of the Daleks, has died.
A popular actor, Peter worked mainly in children's television, providing voices for the original Bill and Ben (and developing their curious Oddle-Poddle language), Captain Pugwash and even Zippy (eventually replaced by fellow Dalek man Roy Skelton).
In the 1980s, he narrated the cartoon adventures of Jimbo and the Jet Set and The Family-Ness.
For most fans of Doctor Who he was, with David Graham, the voice of the original Daleks, working on every Dalek serial of the 1960s as well as the two big-screen Dalek movies.
Peter died on 8 July. He is survived by his wife, Rosemary and his son, Silas. "

Maureen O'Brien Returns to Who |
After keeping a distance from Doctor Who for many years, Maureen O'Brien is set to guest-star along side Colin Baker and Nicola Bryant in next January's Doctor Who audio play from Big Finish, entitled Year of the Pig. Maureen will be playing Miss Alice Bultitude, a slightly dotty collector of theatrical ephemera.
Maureen previously appeared in Doctor Who on television in 1965 as the orphaned Vicki and travelled in the TARDIS with the first Doctor as played by William Hartnell. Vicki's final appearance in the series was in the story, The Myth Makers where she takes the name Cressida and leaves the TARDIS to marry Troilus.

Cyberman Facts |
Prepare for the return of the classic Doctor Who monsters with our guide to everything you need to know about the Cybermen!
The Cybermen appeared in ten stories of the classic series (not counting brief cameo appearances or flashbacks, okay?).
They were the brainchild of Dr Kit (Christopher) Pedlar and his writing partner Gerry Davis. A doctor and biological scientist, Pedler was an expert on the human retina and eye diseases, and acted as the Doctor Who production team's scientific adviser for a time in the 60s.

The BBC is to decide whether one of its magazine editors broke guidelines by using an issue to promote his own book.

Doctor Who reads out your TXTs |
Send a text message to a UK landline and the recipient will now hear the missive read out by Doctor Who. Well, one of 'em, anyway. Yes, Tom Baker - for many, the definitive incarnation of the Time Lord - is the voice of BT's new text-to-speed system. Well, for three months, anyway.
n 2005, UK mobile users sent, on average, 82m texts a day - almost 30bn a year - to other handset owners. Now they can send them to landlines too, their often semi-literate, vowel-less jottings converted into Baker's warm, avuncular tones. For example, 'init?' becomes 'Isn't that so, dear boy. I was adored, you know..

More photos of Doctor Who filming (@SFX) |

The Doctor Who production team have been out and about again. Unofficial roving reporter Darren Floyd saw them filming at Glamorgan Records Office in Cardiff on the morning of Friday 4 February. Unfortunately, Darren didn't have a camera (bless him), but he did send us one of his usual pieces of high-quality Gonzo journalism...
