Piper Quits Doctor Who

LONDON—The BBC officially confirmed that Billie Piper will be leaving Doctor Who at the end of season two, currently airing in the United Kingdom. Rumors had been circulating for months that the actress, who plays the Doctor's (David Tennant) traveling companion Rose Tyler in the hit BBC science fiction series, had already moved on to other projects, but the show's production office had refused to comment until now. A June 15 press release on the BBC's official Web site announced that Piper would exit the show "in a nail-biting [season]-two finale."

Piper's work on the series has already earned her a National Television Award for most popular actress of 2005 and The South Bank Show's "Breakthrough Award for Rising British Talent" award. The actress, who is currently playing the lead role in the BBC's adaptation of Philip Pullman's fantasy novel The Ruby in the Smoke, now in production, said in a statement: "Rose and I have gone on the most incredible journey with [series creator] Russell T. Davies and the cast and crew of Doctor Who over the past two years. It has been an amazing adventure, and I can confirm it comes to an end, for now at least, as [season] two climaxes. I am truly indebted to Russell for giving me the chance to play Rose Tyler, and to all the Doctor Who fans old and new who have been so supportive of me in this amazing role. Thank you so much."

Davies, the show's head writer and executive producer, added in his own statement: "It has been a wonderful experience working with Billie. We will miss her and wish her all the success in the world for her future. However, the Doctor Who team have had a whole year to plan this final scene and have created a stunning exit for Rose Tyler. The Doctor lives a dangerous life, and when Rose joined him on his adventures, she was aware of this. With a series climax called 'Doomsday' on its way, I can't guarantee who will survive and who won't, but I can assure you the TARDIS is going on its scariest journey yet!"

Piper's final episodes of Doctor Who, "Army of Ghosts" and "Doomsday," will air on BBC1 July 1 and 8. The two-parter was originally shot as part of a four-episode block back in December and January, but the elements of the storyline, which included Rose's departure, have been kept tightly under wraps.

SCI FI Wire asked Davies about Piper's possible exit at the press launch for season two in April, but the producer declined to answer the question directly, confirming only that long-term planning on the series actually goes on a number of months in advance. "The departure of Chris [Eccleston] was planned for many months," he said. "And that, unfortunately, leaked. But we had been talking about it for many months before that, so next year [season three]'s format is actually structured already. In that sense, it's entirely set in stone, but things can change, and we will swing with the breeze, I suppose. But it's not that bad; we do know what's going to happen." The first season of Doctor Who just concluded its U.S. airing on SCI FI Channel. —Joe Nazzaro from scifi.com without permission.
