Doctor Who preview: episode five, "Rise of the Cybermen"
New Doctor Who Serial If the new season is doing one thing, it’s demonstrating the infinite flexibility of this show’s format. So it is that we move on from a century-hopping surrealist romance to an episode that’s surprisingly tough. Directed by Who veteran Graeme Harper, the opening salvo in this two-parter is as close as Who gets to James Bond. Megalomaniac villain? Check. Tuxedo? Check. Machine guns? Check!

As is widely known, the story is set on an alternate Earth, but if you’re hoping for an evil alternate Rose dressed entirely in black leather then you’re going to be disappointed - the treatment is more subtle than that. The setting allows for Rose to go on another emotional journey, although this involves retreading old ground, so you may be more interested in the way that Mickey is finally fleshed out. We see a new side of “Ricky the idiot” in this story - in more ways than one - and Noel Clarke grabs the opportunities the script gives him with both hands.

The alternate world setting also allows a reboot for Cyber-continuity that’s arguably as radical as the new creation myth for the Daleks offered in 1975’s “Genesis of the Daleks” - one that ties in with our obsession with technology in this age of mobile phones and iPods. Fear not though, these are still essentially the same old Cybermen. A few sly references to past adventures will delight fans, and the silver giants look fantastic in action - more powerful than they ever have before. Thanks to new weaponry and a new catchphrase we have no doubt that kids will soon be playing Cybermen in playgrounds across the nation.

One final tease: prepare for what is, without doubt, the weirdest, most incongruous use of pop music in Doctor Who ever... Ian Berriman
